The RGOs
For the past two days I've been going through a lot of stress. Finally, I was able to get together all that's necessary for my trip to Costa Rica and get Isabella's RGOs. My feelings are a mixture of happiness and sadness. I'm happy for the opportunity that has been given to us but especially for Mari. I'm sad cause I'm leaving my home and the rest of my family behind. I know it will only be for a couple of days, but it still affects us in some way or another. It just breaks my heart to leave Marce. When I say that it breaks my heart I literally mean it.
I am also sad for all the things we will have to go through in this trip, beginning with the casting of Mari's legs and trunk. But I know that at the end all that stress, time spent, cries heard, and the long waiting process until we see what we have all prayed for and waited for, Mari taking her first step, will make everything worth it.
The RGOs:
A reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO) is also a HKAFO however it allows one leg to be placed ahead of another - more like normal walking. Therefore as one leg is flexed or brought forward, it causes a reciprocal extension of the other leg. This allows a much smoother gait and greatly reduces the amount of effort that is needed to walk. A walker can often be abandoned for forearm crutches.
RGOs tend to be most successfully used for children with spina bifida starting as young as 2.5.
The RGO is commonly used for individuals with a lesion level of T12 to L3 (although higher levels are possible) who lack adequate strength to maintain hip extension. Good upper extremity strength, high motivation levels, good family support and minimal contractures definately contribute to the successful use of the device.
